Moving is a stressful experience, so making your move an ecologically sound one may not be on the top of your list. Fortunately, you can keep things green by planning ahead and taking a few simple steps. You do not have to abandon your environmental principles during a move.

Reusable Containers

If possible, pack your things in reusable containers. You may already have some large plastic boxes at home, and you can also ask your friends and family to loan you what they have. Some moving companies, such as Affordable Transfer Co Inc., also provide containers made out of recycled plastic for you to pack. If you need to use cardboard, try and get discarded boxes from a local supermarket or discount store. Often the tape you choose cannot be recycled and takes a long time to degrade, so try and use as little as possible.

Packing Material

Replace your usual packing peanuts and bubble wrap with "green" alternatives. These items are often green in color, so they are easy for you to find. Instead of polystyrene, these new materials are made out of bioplastics. Also, use what you have at home to protect your items. You can take your towels, bedding, and clothing and wrap your fragile items with them. Recyclable substances like newspapers and magazines are also an excellent choice to cushion your possessions.

Disposal

You will save time and help the environment by culling unwanted items from your home. Dispose of them in a "green" way by selling, donating, or recycling them.  A yard sale can potentially make you money while eliminating many items from your move. Fewer items to move means the moving vehicle can be smaller, saving fuel and reducing your carbon footprint.

Cleaning

When you clean your house before the move, use environmentally-friendly cleaning products. Whenever possible, use non-toxic cleaners that will not pollute the groundwater or cause respiratory problems. Eliminate those products with harmful chemicals and use natural items such as baking soda, vinegar, and lemon juice to get your home sparkling clean.

If you are devoted to protecting the environment, you can apply those principles to your move. Seek out reusable containers and green packing materials for those items you will be transporting. Get rid of anything you do not need in a responsible manner. Also, always use non-toxic cleaning items when you are preparing to move and after. You can practice the same sort of environmental care when you are moving as you do in your daily life.
